HOSPITAL STATISTICS: A TOOL FOR MONITORING TRANSPLANTATION PROGRAM

Renal transplantation and re-hospitalization after that, which is nearly frequent, are both costly. Any measure that helps identify and reduce the re-hospitalizations is of great value in budgeting and planning the healthcare systems. One of these measures is hospitalization record. Unfortunately, it’s often neglected in developing countries, which mainly have limited resources. Our experience with time-trend analysis of 10 years’ re-hospitalizations after renal transplantation clarified an important trend, which is reported here. We retrospectively analyzed 567 records of post kidney transplantation re-hospitalization, in Baqyiatallah hospital, Tehran, Iran, 1995 to 2005. The re-hospitalization cause and patients’ data were extracted and the trend of changes was assessed. Hospitalization rates for renal dysfunction first increased from 40% in 1995 to 64% in 1999, then decreased to 43% in 2001, 26% in 2003 and 24% in 2005 (P<0.05, for each change, except for 2003 and 2005). The proportion of diabetics in re-admissions followed the similar trend, increasing from 3% in 1995 to its maximum level of 21% in 1999. In this year, the time interval between transplantation and re-admission reached its shortest level. Our experience showed the indirect burden of diabetes on kidney transplantation in a certain time period in our hospital. This kind of information is easy to acquire but has precious implications. We conclude that such simple information sources should be more valued, specially in developing countries with the plan of expansion of their transplantation programs.
