Since 1995, the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau (HSCSP) has been organizing an educational programme on donation and transplantation for high school students. The main objective is to promote awareness on the therapeutic importance of transplantation. The programme is conducted at the HSCSP and has a major limitation: only a small number of students can attend the talks. QUIRON is an Internet platform for donation promotion whose main objective is to overcome the logistic limitations of the present system. The HSCSP developed a website which creates awareness on transplantation and promotes donation among the general population. This website publishes multimedia content in order to show the visitor the entire donation and transplantation process, placing special emphasis on sensitive issues. It includes video documents of real-life interviews with donors’ families, patients waiting for an organ, and already-transplanted patients. The talks and the interviews have been recorded and digitalised. A multimedia course has been produced and diffused on the Internet for online access. QUIRON incorporates videoconference, chat and forum tools so that students will have the opportunity to gain a realistic picture of the urgent need for organs and tissues. QUIRON can provide an efficient, interactive educational programme on donation and transplantation. The website can be a powerful tool to enable the population to make informed decisions regarding donation. The rate of donation consent should thereby increase in the mid- and long-term and the number of available organs and tissues for transplantation could increase.
