AN ANALYSIS OF PUBLISHED ARTICLES ON THE TOPIC OF TRANSPLANTATION IN IRANIAN BIOMEDICAL JOURNALS

Scientific articles are the indicators of research interests and efforts in every country. The aim of the current study is to describe the characteristics of the transplantation related research efforts through the domestic published works in Iran between 1993 and 2003. In an descriptive design, we searched IranMedex (Iranian database for indexing medical articles; available at: http//www. iranmedex.com) for all the biomedical articles published between 1993 and 2003 in 91 Iranian journals. The search conducted using the 'Transplantation' as MeSH term or Title word. A printed copy of the references obtained, and each reference reviewed for the transplant organ, study design, numbers of authors, and the type of article. From total 11371 articles, 545 (4.8%) considered to deal with transplantation. The trend in publications on transplantation was increasing. Most of the papers were published in Farsi (90%). Original articles (84.4%) were published most frequently. The main subjects of all the articles were kidney transplantation (61.7%), followed by Liver (12%), bone marrow (10.8%) and cornea was only the topic of research in 3%. Clinical trials consist 9.5 % of all manuscripts. The mean number of authors was 3.6 ± 2.2 (1-14). Iranian researchers seem to be interested in the topic of transplantation, however, some fields of transplantation are neglected. This pooling of valuable information can be used by other countries, specially, by researchers from MESOT region. Such databases could form an invaluable network for exchange of experience in the region to solve the common problems.
