EFFECT OF RECIPIENT AGE ON THE OUTCOME OF KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION

To study the effect of Recipient Age (RA) on the outcome of Kidney Transplantation (KT) in 149 renal transplant patients done in our hospital between December 1998 and November 2004 with a follow-up of 1 year. Patients were divided in 3 groups: Group A (115 patients) with a RA below 50 years, Group B (21 patients) with a RA between 50 and 60 years and Group C (13 patients) with a RA of 60 years or above. All demographic, epidemiological, immunological, medical, and surgical data in this retrospective study were compiled and analyzed by SPSS11.0. Induction therapy and maintenance immunosuppression were comparable between the 3 groups. However, there were more diabetic patients in Group B. The rate of acute rejection, rate and type of infections, rate of delayed graft function, length of hospital stay, creatinine blood levels at 3, 6 and 12 months, incidence at 1 year of post-transplant high blood pressure, cholesterol and triglycerides blood levels as well as the rate of post-transplant surgical complications and the 1-year graft and patient survival were comparable between the 3 groups. However, severe acute rejections, creatinine blood level at 1 month and the 1-year fasting blood sugar were significantly higher in Group B. The RA seems not to be a major predictive value in our study. Good selection and pretransplant preparation of renal transplant patients are important factors for a better outcome.
