To assess the surgical complications of kidney transplantation in diabetic recipients we enrolled 1108 patients received living donor kidney transplantation in our center from 1992-2001. Pre-transplant diabetes mellitus was seen in 95 patients (study group) and 1013 cases were not diabetic (control group). The mean follow up period was 27.3 months. Surgical complications (i.e. vascular and Ureteral complications, wound infection and lymphoceles) occurred in 11 of the diabetic recipients (11.07%) and 32 (3.15%) of the non-diabetic group with significant difference between two groups (P<0.001). This Study indicates that surgical complications are more common in diabetic recipients compared to those are not diabetes mellitus, but these complications can be managed with no important effect on the patient or the graft survivals.
