In order to investigate the incidence of unwanted pregnancy among kidney transplant recipients, we interviewed 33 cases of kidney transplant recipients who had at least one pregnancy after transplant surgery. 16(48.5%) pregnancies were unwanted, three pregnancies were terminated by induced abortion, 6 pregnancies were lost either as miscarriage or intrauterine fetal death, and only 7 pregnancies resulted in live birth. Most of unwanted pregnancies occurred in women using coitus interruptus (93.7%) as only method of contraception. It is concluded that as fertility greatly improves after kidney transplantation, it is necessary to have a family planning counselling session before surgery, and if patient is not interested in future pregnancy, an effective method of contraception should be offered. Tubal ligation at the time of transplant surgery should be considered for the older, multipara patients.
