KIDNEY TRANSPLANTATION IN VIRAL HEPATITIS – ROLE FOR HERBAL DIALYSIS

8 out of 12 patients who had viral hepatitis due to Hepatitis B or C underwent renal transplant. Out of 12 patients 7 were positive for Hepatitis C virus and 5 for Hepatitis B. All the patients underwent herbal Dialysis with Phyllanthus N and Ocimum Sanctum extracts infused in dialysis water. In all patients all the viral markers were done including PCR DNA and RNA for Hepatitis B and C respectively. Hepatitis E antigen was positive for 3 patients and raised liver function test in 6 out of twelve patients. Herbal dialysis was carried out in all patient and markers evaluated at end of every three dialysis. Liver function returned to normal in 3 patients in 3rd dialysis and in all by the sixth dialysis session. Hepatitis e antigen became negative in all the patients by sixth dialysis and viral load reduced to less than 100 in all patients and in eight it was Nil. 8 patients underwent renal transplant and the follow up period was between three to six months. Liver function was normal and Lamovudine was initiated in three patients whose viral load increased. Patients are closely followed up to see the long-term outcome. For the first time in the world Herbal Dialysis is defined. Dramatic results were seen in patients with hepatitis with cure from hepatitis leading to transplantation. Herbal Dialysis is a useful procedure in developing countries with high incidence of hepatitis.
