We performed renal transplantation using magnification to reduce the risk of vascular and ureteral complications.
Between January 1999 and May 2004, 150 consecutive renal transplants were carried out at our hospital in patients ranging in age from 12 to 70 years (mean 46.5). Most of the transplantations involved living and a few of them (5) harvested from cadaveric donors. The renal artery and vein anastomosed to internal iliac artery and external iliac vein respectively using magnification (2.5 X- 42cm.). The ureter was implanted into to bladder by modified Lich technique and again using magnification. Patients were followed for at least 1 month, with the longest follow up being 4 years (mean 24 months). No ureteral and vascular (thrombosis and stenosis) complications occurred in our patients. Renal transplantation can be performed through magnification safely, easily with the lowest complication rates and we strongly recommend renal transplantation using magnification.
