OUTCOME OF BK VIRUS NEPHROPATHY IN RENALTRANSPLANT RECIPIENTS

Treatment and outcome of BKV Nephropathy (BKVN) is variably reported in the literature. We prospectively identified 11 patients with BKVN. All patients had BK viruria and BK viremia detected by PCR. Eight subjects had renal histological features of BKVN in the initial biopsy while other 3 developed it subsequently. BKVN developed after 5.3 + 2.5 (2 – 44) months after transplantation. The serum creatinine at time of diagnosis of BKVN was 158.9 + 58 ( 87 – 285) umol/l in these RTR. All subjects were treated with 50% reduction in immunosuppressive drug doses initially. Further decrease in immunosuppression was done in all patients with close monitoring of renal function. All subjects were followed up for a mean period of 18.2 + 5 (12 – 26) months. Two grafts were lost not due to BKVN and one patient was lost for follow up during this period. The latest serum creatinine in eight RTR is 113 + 20 (81 – 138) umol/l which is better than the renal function at diagnosis. BKVN can be successfully treated with reduction of immunosuppression.
