ASSOCIATION OF SERUM LIPOPROTEIN(A) WITH ULTRASONOGRAPHICALLY DETERMINED EARLY ATHEROSCLEROTIC CHANGES IN THE CAROTID AND FEMORAL ARTERY IN KIDNEY TRANSPLANTED PATIENTS

To evaluate the association of serum lipoprotein(a)(LP(a) ) with carotid-intimae-media thickness(IMT) and carotid-femoral plaque occurrence in kidney transplanted patients. Fifty-four subjects consisting of (group1) 29 (f =17, m=12) normal healthy persons and 25 (f =17, m=8) kidney transplanted patients (group2) were selected and evaluated for Carotid-intimae-media thickness (IMT) measurement and for carotid-femoral plaque assessment by B-mode ultraSonography . Also cholesterol, Triglyceride, HDL-C, LDL-C and lipoprotein(a)(Lp(a)) and Bun and creatinin were measured. There was a significant difference between of Lp(a) in two groups (p=0.016). There was a significant difference between carotid- IMT of two groups (p<0.001), moreover significant difference between plaque scores of kidney transplant patients with normal group were found (p=0.05) . There were not any correlation between carotid-IMt with plaque score in normal subjects as well as in kidney transplanted patients (P>0.05). There was a significant correlation between carotid- IMT with age in group one (p=0.035). No correlation between carotid- IMT and serum Lp (a) in two groups was seen .No significant correlation between plaque scoreand serum LP(a) were observed . There was not any correlation between duration of receiving a transplanted kidney with thickening of intimae-media complex in this group. In group positive correlation between carotid-IMT with serum LDL-C was demonstrated (p<0.001). age was the most important factor in association with thickening of intimae-media complex in normal subjects and in plaque formation in renal transplant group. Serum LDL-C have association with thickening of intima-media complex in kidney transplant patients. Serum LP(a) may not a significant factor in thickening of intima-media complex and plaque occurrence in kidney transplant patients.
