To compare the surgical complications of kidney retransplantation with first one we reviewed 1108 recipients who operated in our center from 1992-2001 with 27.3 months mean follow up. Kidney retransplantation was done in 65 recipients (case group) and first transplantation was performed in 1043 patients (Control group). Male/female ratio in case and control groups was 1.84/1 and 1.8/1, respectively. Mean age in case and control groups was 34.94 and 38.25 years, respectively. Diabetes mellitus was seen in one and 94 patients in two groups, respectively.
Mean last creatinine in patients with active graft was 1.45 mg%, there was no significant differences in two groups. Surgical complications were seen in 3 patients of case group (4.61%) that include vascular complication (1) and lymphocele (2), but we did not find wound and ureteral complications. Although, these complications were seen in 40 recipients of control group in the same period (3.83%) that include 16,7,8 and 9 cases for vascular, wound, lymphocele and ureteral complications, respectively. Overall surgical complications in two groups were compared with chi- square test with no significant difference (P= 0.7). Also comparison of each four subgroups of complications showed no difference between two groups. Our results show that retransplantation in patients losing first graft is recommended as a good choice and surgical complications of regraft in living donor transplant are not more than first one.
