CADAVERIC RENAL TRANSPLANTATION AT SOUTHERN IRAN (SHIRAZ) ORGAN TRANSPLANT CENTER

Cadaveric kidney is a vital resource in the treatment of patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Renal transplantation offers several advantages over maintenance dialysis, and it is widely accepted that renal transplantation is the treatment of choice for ESRD. Cadaveric renal transplantation program was initiated in May 1992 in Shiraz. In this study, the demographic and clinical data of all cadaveric renal transplant recipients performed in Shiraz Organ Transplant Center between May 1992 and May 2003 were recorded. Recipients received triple immunosuppressive therapy with Cyclosporine, Azathioprine, and Prednisolone (induction with Methylprednisolone). A total of 118 cadaveric renal transplants were performed. 63 recipients were male and 55 were female. The mean (±SD) recipient age at presentation was 29.2±13.7 years. It was the first transplantation for 111 recipients and second for the remaining seven. The incidence of ATN and acute rejection were 13% and 15%, respectively. Graft survival was 92% in one year. Patient survival in first and third year post transplant were 92% and 83%, respectively. Statistical analysis of above data showed the following results: the number of cadaveric renal transplants per year has increased during recent years in this center. The influence of sex on outcome was in a way that females were both better donors and better recipients. Reported survival is comparable to that of established centers. Appropriate measures must be undertaken to improve cadaveric organ donation rate as a very vital source for transplant organs throughout the world.
