OUTCOME OF 1179 RENAL TRANSPLANTATION IN ONE CENTER

1179 kidney transplantation was done in uraemia renal transplantation center- Iran, From September 1986 until aprill2003. Majority (97.3%) of patients (pts) received kidney from living unrelated donors. Immunosuppression was consisting of cyclosporine, prednisolone, azathioprine (mycophenolate Mofetil in18.21% of pts), (and anti lymphocyte globulin in pts with delayed graft function or steroid resistant acute rejections, and in second transplant).
From 1179 pts 581(49.27%) were female and 598(50.73) were male. Mean age was 38.82+-12.87 years.374 (31.72%) pts were diabetic. 35 (2.96%) pts were infected with hepatitis B virus, and 45 (3.81%)pts with hepatitis C virus. Second transplant was done in 27(2.2%)of pts. 226 (19.16%) of pts (141 male and 85 female) returned to dialysis. 180 (15.26%)of pts (115 male and 65 female) died. means of graft survival was 90.38% in one year, 80.11% in three years and 66.42% in five years. Causes of death were: cardiovascular events in 75 pts (41.66%) , infections in 70 pts (38.88%), malignancies in 15 pts (8.3%) , tuberculosis in 11 pts (6.1%) , hepatic failure in 5 pts(2.7 %) , hemorrhagic pancreatitis in 2 pts (1.1%), and 2 pts (1.1%) with unknown causes. Malignancy occurred in 38 (2.96%) of all pts. 31.7% of them are Kaposi’s sarcoma, 27.3% skin and lip carcinoma, 14.1% non Hodgkin lymphoma, 13.60% bladder TCC, 4.5% breast cancer, 4.5% thyroid cancer, 4.5% gastric and colon cancer. 15 (39.47 %) of them died. Tuberculosis occurred in 38 (3.22%) of all pts. 11 (28.94%) of them died. Patients and graft survival are significantly lower in male than female pts.
