AN ORGAN PROCUREMENT PROGRAM FOR THE MESOT AREA

Transplantation is a universally accepted modality of treatment. It has established itself as a life-saving procedure even for those patients (renal) who were considered “blessed” since they could benefit from substitution therapies. The skills to perform successful transplantation are becoming more and more available in the MESOT area. What we, however, share with the rest of the world is a paralyzing organ shortage. In the absence of significant religious barriers we have to learn to overcome social taboos. We can then: Improve our cadaveric donation programs by: a) A better detection of potential cadaveric donors. This can be achieved through a more intensive use of trained and committed transplant coordinators (Spanish experience). b) Extending the age of the potential cadaveric donors to provide valid organs for a well defined population of elderly recipients. We have to take full advantage of our living donation program. The Iranian system has succeeded in eliminating the kidney waiting list. We have to learn from it and from the objections it has raised. We can then devise a modified living donation program adapted to the Amsterdam resolutions. Let us all join efforts to stabilize; limit and hopefully, one day, eliminate our own increasing waiting lists.
